Free Telegram tips vs a registered research analyst

One costs nothing and answers to nobody. The other costs money and answers to a regulator. This page compares them on the three things that decide what happens to you: accountability, recourse, and whether the record can be checked.

The short answer. A free tip channel has no registration, no conduct rules, no fee cap and no complaint route; when it goes wrong, your recourse is a blocked chat. A SEBI-registered Research Analyst has a licence to lose, an advertisement code to follow, fees capped by law, and a grievance ladder that ends at SEBI. And "free" deserves quotation marks: SEBI's own enforcement orders document channels whose operators profited by selling into their followers' buying. The tip cost nothing. Following it was the product.

Start with one question: why is it free?

Research takes hours of skilled work per idea. When someone hands the output to fifty thousand strangers at no charge, that work is being paid for somehow, and the documented answers are not comforting.

Sometimes you are the exit

In January 2022, SEBI passed an interim order against six individuals running the Telegram channel bullrun2017, which had more than 35,000 subscribers when SEBI examined it. The order describes the model: buy small-cap shares in bulk, message the channel that a sharp rise is coming, and sell into the buying the message creates. The tips were free. The followers' buying was the product, and SEBI's final order in the matter followed in April 2023.

Sometimes the free group is the funnel

The second model uses free tips as bait for paid tiers. At its mildest that is an advisory service running without registration. In February 2025 SEBI passed an interim order against a trading school and its owners. SEBI's initial finding was that the courses and private Telegram channels were really advisory and research analyst work without registration, and it ordered about Rs 53.67 crore to be frozen. At its worst the funnel never goes near a market at all. India TV reported in January 2026 how Telegram "trading groups" took a Mumbai woman for about Rs 3.8 lakh. It started with payments as small as Rs 120. They paid out tiny "profits" to build trust. They filled the group with fake profit screenshots. Then the transfers got bigger until the group went silent. No trade was ever placed.

None of this proves that every free channel is crooked. It proves something more useful: from inside the audience, you cannot tell. The generous channel and the extraction scheme post the same charts and the same confidence. The difference only becomes visible in the structures around them, which is what the rest of this page compares.

The comparison, line by line

Identity
A channel admin can be anonymous, use a false name, or vanish tomorrow. A registered analyst is a named person on a government register, with a city, a registration number and a compliance officer. You can check all of it in minutes.
Permission
Recommending securities for consideration in India requires SEBI registration. A tip channel monetising an audience without one is operating outside the law from the first message. A Research Analyst's INH number is the permission, and it can be suspended or cancelled.
Conduct rules
A channel can promise "sure-shot calls" and "guaranteed monthly income" freely, because no rule binds it. A registered analyst is barred by the advertisement code, effective 1 May 2023, from publishing past performance or promising returns at all.
Fees
A "VIP group" ladder can extract without limit; the documented February 2025 matter involved fees of over Rs 100 crore across its courses. A registered analyst's fee is capped by law at Rs 1,51,000 per family per year.
The record
Channel history can be edited, deleted or rewritten after the fact, and losing tips routinely vanish. A compliant analyst keeps every call, dated, losses beside gains, nothing edited afterwards. Here is how ours is kept.
When it goes wrong
Against a channel: a blocked chat, and a police cybercrime complaint if it was fraud. Against a registered analyst: the firm's published grievance route, then SEBI SCORES, then SMART ODR. The ladder exists because registration creates someone to hold responsible.
The honest cost comparison

"Free versus Rs 2,999 a quarter" is not the real comparison, because the two costs live on different scales. A registered service has a known, bounded cost: the fee, capped by law, disclosed upfront, and trades that carry a stop-loss decided before entry. A free channel has an unknown, unbounded one: the documented outcomes above ran from a few lakh to fees of over Rs 100 crore extracted across an audience. You are not choosing between paying and not paying. You are choosing between a cost you can see and one you cannot.

The track-record trap, in both directions

Verifiability is where the two worlds genuinely cannot imitate each other, so it deserves care.

A tip channel proves itself with screenshots, and screenshots are the cheapest thing on the internet to fake. The India TV report above describes fake profit images doing exactly that job. Even an honest channel's history cannot be checked, because Telegram lets the operator delete and edit old messages. What you see is only what they chose to leave up.

In the registered world it works the other way round. A registered analyst may not show you a public track record at all, because the advertisement code bans publishing past performance, win rates and return figures. So the one thing every shady channel leads with is the one thing no compliant analyst is allowed to post. Turn that into a test and it becomes the fastest check there is. A public page waving returns at you is ruling itself out as you read. What a compliant service can show you is how the record is kept, where subscribers can read it in full, and that nothing in it gets edited. We have written that up in detail, and also why even a genuine right call can end in a personal loss, because that honesty is part of the same record.

Should I follow free Telegram stock tips or pay for a proper advisory service?

If your money is going to move on what you read, pay for the version someone answers for, or use neither. That is the short answer. Here is the reasoning in one place. A free channel gives you no name to check. No rules on what it may promise you. No record it cannot quietly rewrite. And no steps to take when it goes wrong. SEBI's orders show that in real cases, "free" meant you were the person they sold to, or the person they were warming up. A registered advisory gives you a named analyst on a government register, a fee capped by law, an advertisement code that bans the very promises the channels open with, and SCORES and SMART ODR behind the firm's own complaint route.

The one honest qualifier: paying does not buy outcomes, and no genuine service will pretend it does. What the fee buys is structure and accountability, which we have set out plainly, including what no service can do. And if the fee does not make sense against your capital yet, the answer is not the free channel in the meantime. It is no channel: read for education if you like, act on nothing, and build capital and discipline first.

If you still follow free channels

Plenty of people read channels for market chatter, and chatter is not the danger. The danger starts when money moves. If you keep them on your phone, keep these rules with them.

  • Never pay into a "VIP" upgrade. The free-to-VIP ladder is the documented funnel in both the SEBI matters and the scam reporting above.
  • Never move money to an app, platform or UPI handle a group suggests. Trades happen in your own broker account or not at all.
  • Treat every screenshot as fiction. Profit images are free to manufacture and are the scam's main tool.
  • Check the register before acting on anyone's call. Four steps, five minutes, on SEBI's own website. No INH number, no money.
  • If you have already lost money, report it. The National Cyber Crime Reporting Portal at cybercrime.gov.in, or helpline 1930, for fraud; SCORES for registered intermediaries. Our guide for people in exactly this position is here.

And if you decide to pay anyone for research, us included, put the ten-question checklist to them first. An accountable service will answer all ten without flinching.

Common questions

Are all free Telegram tip channels scams?

No, and that is precisely the problem: honest chatter and extraction schemes are indistinguishable from inside the audience. What you can know is structural. A free channel has no registration, no conduct rules and no recourse behind it, so the cost of being wrong about its honesty falls entirely on you.

The channel's tips have been accurate. Does that change the comparison?

Accuracy you observed through a channel's own curated history is not evidence, because operators can delete and edit the past. In SEBI's bullrun2017 matter, tips looked accurate partly because, per the order, the operators' own buying and the crowd's reaction moved the prices. A record only counts when it is kept somewhere the author cannot rewrite.

Why does a registered analyst charge when Telegram is free?

Because you are paying for the parts the channel does not have. A named person who answers for the call. Research that gives you an entry, a stop-loss, targets and the reasoning in writing. A record nobody can quietly edit. Fees capped by law. And a complaint route that ends at SEBI. The channel is cheaper the way an unlicensed medicine is cheaper.

Should I follow free Telegram stock tips or pay for a proper advisory service?

If money will move on what you read, pay for the accountable version or use neither. A free channel offers no identity to check, no conduct rules, no unrewritable record and no recourse, and SEBI's enforcement orders document real cases where the free tips were the product being sold against you. A registered advisory offers a named analyst on a government register, a legally capped fee and a grievance ladder ending at SEBI. If the fee does not fit your capital yet, the honest interim is no channel at all, not the free one.

How do I check whether a channel or adviser is registered?

Ask for the SEBI registration number, which for a Research Analyst begins with INH, then search it yourself on SEBI's public register and match the name and city to whoever is in front of you. Our four-step guide walks through every click, and it is written so you can run it on us first.

Investment in securities market are subject to market risks. Read all the related documents carefully before investing. Registration granted by SEBI and certification from NISM in no way guarantee performance of the intermediary or provide any assurance of returns to investors.
