Why is Nifty expiry on Monday 9 November 2026 instead of Tuesday?

Nifty 50 options normally expire on a Tuesday. The Tuesday of that week, 10 November 2026, is a trading holiday, so NSE's own rule moves the expiry back one trading day, to Monday 9 November.

Published 5 November 2026 · Potoos Research Services

The short answer. Tuesday 10 November 2026 is a trading holiday on NSE for Diwali-Balipratipada. NSE's rule says that when the Tuesday of the expiry period is a trading holiday, the contracts expire on the previous trading day. That day is Monday 9 November, so the Nifty 50 weekly options contract for that week expires on 9 November. It is a weekly expiry only: the November monthly contracts expire on 23 November.

The rule, in NSE's words

“Nifty 50 index options monthly contracts expire on the last Tuesday of the expiry month and weekly contracts expire on every Tuesday of the expiry week. If the Tuesday of the expiry period is a trading holiday, the contracts expire on the previous trading day.”

NSE, Nifty 50 equity derivatives product page, “Expiry Day”, checked 4 November 2026

Tuesday has been the Nifty expiry day since NSE's circular NSE/FAOP/68747 of 25 June 2025. It moved Nifty weekly contracts from Thursday to Tuesday, and Nifty monthly, quarterly and half-yearly contracts to the last Tuesday of the month, for contracts expiring on or after 1 September 2025.

Why Tuesday 10 November is a holiday

NSE's list of trading holidays for 2026 shows Tuesday 10 November 2026, Diwali-Balipratipada, as a holiday. It is on the list for the equity derivatives segment and for the cash market. There is no trading on NSE that day, so no contract can expire on it.

Which contracts expire on 9 November, and which do not

Not all F&O contracts expire on 9 November. These are the expiry dates on NSE's own list of contract expiry dates, checked on 4 November 2026:

November has a second early expiry

NSE's holiday list also shows Tuesday 24 November 2026, Prakash Gurpurb Sri Guru Nanak Dev, as a trading holiday. 24 November is the last Tuesday of November, the normal monthly expiry day. Under the same rule, the November monthly contracts expire one trading day earlier, on Monday 23 November 2026.

Sensex contracts are on BSE

Sensex futures and options trade on BSE, not on NSE. They follow BSE's own expiry day and BSE's holiday list. The NSE rule on this page does not set their dates. Check BSE's notices, or the contract list in your trading app, for the Sensex expiry date.

The Muhurat session on Sunday 8 November

NSE has scheduled its special Diwali Muhurat trading session for Sunday 8 November 2026, ahead of the 9 November expiry. Its timings and what to know are on our page Muhurat trading 2026.
